garage entry

My sister-in-law recently purchased a new home (super exciting) in Carlsbad, blocks from the beach… and yes, we plan to visit a lot! :)

Walking through her new home she mentioned that she’d really like a place for the kids to keep their back packs, jackets, etc… to keep things organized (and since there are 4 kiddo’s it’s even more important to keep a handle on all the “stuff”).

Her original idea was to do some sort of a locker system, built-in style, near their main entrance. The house has an alcove already there, however my sister-in-law wasn’t sure of the cost and she wants to be budget friendly until they’ve had some time to actually live in their new home.

Upon walking around the house I saw a strange yet perfect space, just off the main living room and near the door to the garage entrance. I pointed it out and mentioned that I thought the space would be perfect for her backpack/jacket/locker area. She was a little thrown at first but as I explained that most of the time they’d be coming in through the garage and not the front door, this may be a better place. In addition to that, this area may become somewhat cluttered, and that kind of mess wouldn’t be nice next to the front door.

Here is the picture she sent me of her space, in it;s current state:

Her living area and kitchen are open to this room. The garage entrance is to the right of this photo, and her dining table is going to be to the left of this photo (if that helps to give you a better idea of the space… maybe not).

And here is what I came up with for her… as a starting point for this area.

#1  - Need a bench! I advised that she could make a simple farmhouse bench and it could be the exact size of the space for a reasonable price. I especially love this plan here. Paint it or stain it… almost any color would work here. I think a stain like this would look really cool.
#2. – Chalkboard paint (I am thinking less than half the wall, want to make the hooks easily accessible to the kids).
#3.  - Trim for the hooks – Purchase 1x8x8 and get it cut to size (length of your wall, it’s only one cut and they will do it for you at Home Depot or Lowes, etc.), then paint it the same color as your baseboards (you’ll already have the paint, so that’s a freebie… whoo-hoo!). Sample piece of wood is like this.
#4.  - A picture or canvas – I think a nice, large canvas print of the entire family (or framed photo), above the hooks, nice and high, will look great!
#5.  - Hook it up! – The hooks I put up are from Room and Board, they come in multiple colors, but you could do any hooks. I think 5 is good, always nice to have an extra hook for yourself or a guest and I like to decorate in odd numbers! lol! :) These hooks are fun and will be easy for the kids to use, large and wide. See the hooks here.
#6.  - Storage – Some baskets for under the bench, maybe one for each kid. I just used plastic ones from here.   These baskets are sturdy and come in multiple colors (that could be fun for the kids), I just used white. BUT, if you do a white bench, do colored baskets.
#7. – Personalize It – Those letters are faux metal letters like these, that you can make. Or these would work too! One letter or number for each kiddo would be fun & makes it personal.
#8. Label It! – Cute chalkboard tags for the baskets. I am loving this store on Etsy with all the super cute chalkboard tags like these.
#9. – Rug – Last but not least, a runner or rug for the area, to help define the space and give the gids a clear boundry of where they need to remove their shoes. I love this rug. And I love this one too (fun colors for the kid space).
That’s my idea! :) Kel said she loves the idea and REALLY loves the space I picked out. She would have never thought to use that space in that way so I guess it always helps to have a set of fresh eyes! I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.
Total Cost for this project would be as follows:
Chalk Paint – free, already have
1x8x8 board cut to size for the hooks – $22
White paint – Free, already have
Bench (by Ana’s plans, for all materials and stain) $57.00 (10% added for misc. doesn’t include tools)
Chalkboard Tags – $24 (or we could make these for Free, but going to include them in this estimate)
Baskets (set of 4 ) – $40
Hooks (5 hooks) – $20 ( I used these hooks instead. They are functional, easy for kids and more cost effective for this project)
Rug (Kel’s space is just under 5 feet so a runner is too long, I thing this one in a 2×3) $33 (and wait for free shipping deal)
WOW!! A fun, functional space that will be used every. single. day. AND for under $200!! That’s a steal!
Make it a great day!

Remember how excited I was about the Johnathan Adler collection being released at JC Penny? If not, be sure to read more about it here (soooo exciting).

I had to share this:

And YES, that included the JA collection, HOLLA!!!!

{patting myself on the back}

Don’t you just love a sale? And one that includes the Jonathan Adler collection… could it be any better????

Make it a great day!

4th of July – web shopping

This 4th of July I hope to be kicking back at Lake Powell, relaxing with my family, taking in all the harmful sun rays I can handle! Truth be told, I love a good tan. I know, that’s awful and I will pay for it but at least I tan with spf 35. That’s good, right?

We won’t be having any big bbq’s or fancy shin-digs to attend.  However, I DO think it would be super fun to web shop to my hearts desire, hire a caterer (and a clean up crew)… and throw the biggest party ever!! A live band set up in the barn, all of our family and friends, plenty of food and all the time in the world would make for a wonderful 4th of July Party, wouldn’t it?

If money was no object & we were going to have a big bash, here are a few {dream} items I’d like to have/decorate my back yard:

Of course, a portable ice maker would be essential for party guests to keep their drinks cool!

We actually have one of these (in a smaller version) and we use it all the time, especially in the summer. It’s easy, fairly quick and super convenient.

I LOVE these red chairs. How fun would it be to have these fabulous guys around some white or maybe even rustic wooden tables and maybe even some blue umbrellas!! So fun!

This table is over-the-top gorgeous! Who wouldn’t love to have one of  these beauties? Okay, so a few of these tables or even just surfing craigslist for some wooden tables, all different… would be more affordable and very awesome!! But I am Web/window shopping here so I can dream and I can buy three of these tables! Oh yes, and 8 chairs at each table!!

While we are on the subject of seating/outdoor dining for my imaginary 4th of July party… I must add some hay bales! Whoop! Whoop! Functional & affordable and then when I am done having my big, swank party, I can use this stuff for my chicken coop… an all around perfect purchase. I would use these around the property for my guests to sit on, eat on, play on… whatever their hearts desire. Of course, I could swing by the local feed store and get these. Super easy.

I would HAVE TO have these at each of my awesome tables with the red cafe chairs!!! These would never be in my budget in the “real” world but I am decorating on monopoly money my friends… aren’t these umbrellas perfect for my 4th of July P A R T EEEE! Oh, yes, I believe they are just what the doctor ordered!!

Some of these simple yet cute, condiment caddy’s at each table, and a few more on the buffet (yes, I will need a buffet table with extras) for those who want to sit and eat wherever… the non-table folk.

Of course, besides having a caterer to cook, organize and serve our amazing BBQ’d meal (so that the hubby can actually have fun and not have to cook for once) we’d need a bartender too. What’s a party without some Shirley Temples for the kids and other goodies for the adults?!! So this portable bar would be a must have at my pretend party where money is no object (obviously).

This is FUN!

I am starting to get carried away. What would your over-the-top-anything-you-wanted party look like?

Happy “almost” 4th of July all!!

And just for fun, here is a Polyvore Mood Board of my personal 4th of July Style:

4th of July Fun

I had some fun making this mood board.. it was like window shopping with a skinny girl’s body!  I picked what I loved and I didn’t have to pay a dime or try anything on, now that’s my kind of shopping! I can just imagine myself in this cute little outfit, looking good, thin (eventually), and flirty! How fun!

Beach Relaxed
I made this on Polyvore. What a fun place to fool around.
And in all honesty, I am really dying to try some colored skinny jeans.  I guess this is step one in the process. Aren’t these orange skinny jeans adorable? Maybe they aren’t for everyone but I am really digging these!
And Rainbow flip flops are my go-to shoes, can’t have enough of these! Best flips ever!
I think the Star Wars shirt would be a hit with my hubby and my little guys, they are all Star Wars fans.
Au natural colors for makeup makes me happy, I love the idea of looking “naturally beautiful”.
Those sweet little rosette earrings add a perfect pop of color and in my favorite color. AND, I just got a pixie cut 4 days ago (a big decision but I did it!!), so these little earring will really show with my super short do!
And of course, no summer outfit is complete without a great pair of shades! I love the wayfarer styles for sure!!!
Have a great “summer” day!

Bistro Chair Love

I LOVE color! I want to add more color outside. Here is my idea.

I LOOOOOOVE these chairs from Fermob. These are drool-worthy! But my pocket book isn’t fat enough to purchase 6 of these bad boys at this price.  I love quality and I want to try to go for more quality over quantity in my life, I just can’t do it for 6 of these… $600 is a bit steep for this girl.

IN COMES MY SEARCH… This is why Google rocks my world!! Search: “metal bistro chairs, folding”… AND THE WINNER IS …. KMART!!!!! Yes, KMART!!! Awesome! (yes, yes,… I know… didn’t I just say quality over quantity?)!

LOVELY, RIGHT? Are you as shocked as me? Kmart has just what I’m looking for!  Okay, so I’m a bit gitty over these chairs & at the great Kmart price, what’s a girl to do? This is an amazing deal for these chairs! (Iknow, I know… quality over quantity… maybe next time!!)

Originally I really wanted all red chairs…. but: …

Same chair, different colors, and different price? Hmmmm… how bad do I want red? I mean, I do see myself as a spray paint enthusiast so maybe I can just get the green chairs and spray them different colors (thinking of red and yellow, maybe even orange chairs… so many choices!!).

Let’s see the price difference in the shopping cart:

Okay, so it’s a little over $20 difference. But now I am thinking I want yellow too, and probably orange (of course). There are not any yellow or orange chairs available to purchase so I apparently I will be painting regardless of what I purchase.  I am going to buy the green chairs and use that $22 to purchase yellow and orange (& maybe even red) spray paint!

TOTAL = 6 green chairs @ $172.74 + free shipping + Tax $11.40 = GRAND TOTAL $184.14 – That’s $30 a chair. I’m stoked.

Can’t wait until these cute little chairs arrive and I can post some new pictures of the space!! Exciting!
