boys room done

The finishing touches are finally done and this room is FINISHED (for now)! Holla! It feels good to be a gangster completer (is that a word?)! Again, HOLLA!

Here is what was the #1 ugliest item that we HAD to get rid of:

The fan! Oh gosh, it is, was, so dang ugly! Such an eye sore! Thankfully, it’s loooooong gone. It has been replaced with this:

Such an improvement if I do say so myself! And we are loving the simplicity of this great ceiling lamp from Ikea (plus the price tag was great too).

Some further improvements were finishing the baseboards (painting and caulking really bites) and installing the mini bookshelves for the boys (by their beds) and the new reading/task lamps, also from Ikea.

We also put up those glow in the dark stars that I promised we’d do (from the mood board here)

And to top off the glow-in-the-dark-funess (and to hide the poor cutting-in paint job that I did, making dark grey marks on the white ceiling…shhhh) I took some glow in the dark duct tape and went around the perimeter of the room…. fun stuff that glow in the dark duct tape!

I think the boys love this new room as much as I do! Gasp, it’s fun and totally functional!

And one last shot of the room, without that hideous fan….

That’s all for now folks!

Enjoy your day!

hanging beds

Yipee!!!! The boys room is finished almost done… the beds are hanging and the boys are sleeping in them! I am so happy with how they turned out and the boys are over-the-moon excited! The hanging beds make the room feel so much larger and give us a ton of additional space. I will post more detailed photos next week. Here is where we’re at so far:

We still need to do all the “detail” work. Getting a new light fixture and ditching that ceiling fan is our first priority (can you say gag?). We’d also like to hang up a few pictures and we need to seal the pine ladder and the beds (to give them a finished look.

The baseboards are painted and caulked (whoo-hoo), beds are fastened down and hanging and the room is clean, we are making LOTS of progress!

On last photo until next week:

Have a great weekend!

boys room *part2

The new bedroom for the boys is fully underway and moving right along! SO exciting! We’ve cleaned it out (whoa… I think there were more than two kids living in that room, we have enough pillows for 4-5 kids, there were candy wrappers from at least 50 kids and there were socks under everything).

Our first step in this renew was CLEAN OUT!

Does it count if “clean out” really just means “move all the crap to another room”? Essentially that’s all we did.  Sure, there was sweeping and throwing away trash (mostly wrappers from when the boys were not sneaking candy), but other than that, everything else was moved into MY bedroom! Just lovely! I know it’s temporary, at least that’s what I tell myself. And looking at all those stuffed animals and pillows… I think we need to do some purging & giving, fo’ sure!

Here was what we started with (and this is a clean room photo, such a rarity):

Pretty much this is how the room has looked for almost three years.  That adorable PB boat bed has been with us since our oldest was 20 months (and he’ll be 9 years old in 2 more months – gasp). I don’t have much of an attachment to the loft bed other than the fact that we built it (modified the plans from here).  We were proud to have built a bed that coordinated with the boat bed, it felt good and it looked great. The boys were happy & so were we.

Now our youngest (the bottom bed guy) is 6 and he’s tired of being ‘down below’, he want s a high bed too… I guess it’s only fair, but how do we incorporate two “high” beds in one room?  Hang them, of course!

My only dilemma was what to do with the beloved family heirloom boat bed. It’s not small, it’s actually quite long (& a bit awkward in shape) and it only fit in this room one direction (so I won’t miss that,… the bulky size & decorating a room entirely around one bed). I am a little sentimental about this bed as it was both the boys 1st bed right after the crib years. It has also been to three homes with us, through our moves and carries a lot of memories with it. Our eldest dog, Elliot, has always slept with the boys on this bed, from day one with baby Collin on up through the 6 years with Noah. Elliot never slept on a bed until the boys were sleeping in one (so sweet & fatherly of him).  Elliot is now 13 years old, he’s stiff, nearly blind and hard of hearing, it breaks my heart to take the bed away from him. It also makes me sad that he can’t sleep with the boys anymore (unless he gets a cape and flys). But, change is good (and I have to repeat that to myself) so we are movin’ on {chin up}! And maybe Elliot will get a ‘new’ bed when this is all said and done.

One last shot of the beds in all their glory. We are taking them down and they will no longer be part of the family after today. Good by beds, it’s been real and it’s been fun but we are done! lol.

Looking better!

The boys were super excited to help with their “new” room. I must also mention that they let me pick out the paint color and well,… pretty much whatever else I wanted. They didn’t have a lot of say in the new room (they don’t like shopping and they aren’t interested in ‘looking’ for stuff on line), they are boys, they just wanted some “outer space” stuff and hanging beds! They are SO easy and I love it!

Tune in tomorrow for more photo’s! TTFN.

New Boys Room

This week we are working away on a NEW room for our 2 boys. I had a great idea on this post here, however we have decided to go another route all together. The reason for our change of heart (as far as the design in this room)… we couldn’t fit two bunk beds/loft beds in one room. And, we weren’t all together happy with the old loft bed that we built a few years ago, it was not entirely sturdy (made a lot of noise). Two loft beds would also mean less space, and this room is already small. So we came up with something new, with more room and very hip!

Here is our current mood board.  We started putting life to this mood board yesterday, so this one is the real deal!

The plan; keep the room simple, modern and also fun for the boys.

1. The boys want an outer space theme, this mobile (or something similar) will be a perfect touch, including dark touches of color throughout the room.

2. Bookshelves are always a must. Both of our boys love to read and we always want to encourage it. These cute, simple little bookshelves would be a great addition, next to each one of the new, hanging beds. These shelves are narrow and won’t stick out too far, therefore we should have less injuries!

3.  LED, battery operated lights that we can stick above their bed for reading light. These look pretty good, something that is small yet efficient and “space” like for our outer space room. I think these are pretty neat. No wiring or cords necessary.

4. We have decided that we are going to build two hanging beds. The photo above was a great starting point for us. Ultimately we are thinking along the lines of a hanging, platform style, bed using link chain (#5)

5. Chain link for hanging the new, platform beds. This is sort of “space” like… metal, and floating, very ‘out-of-this-world’ if you ask me!

6. A gray room, preferably dark gray. I am thinking darker than this swatch. The boy room has not been painted (and it is in desperate need) so anything will look better than it’s current “sponge” painting by the previous home owners.

7. Simple bed linens. A thin, gray wool blanket to wrap around the end of a white sheeted bed would be dreamy (IMO) but the boys may not be entirely keen on that idea. Might be a little too boring for them.

So far that is our decor plan for this room and like I mentioned earlier… we’ve already started!!! Yeah!

Stay tuned, this project WILL be done by the end of the week.
