Dining Room

I finally got around to taking some pictures of my house (holla!)… and now you can see the eclectic, colorful, fun home that I live in every day… I love it. It’s always changing & evolving and soon enough these photos will be the “before” pictures. But as of today, here is what my front-living-room-turned-dining-room looks like:

This was the “sneak peak” that I showed you when I did the summer/front entry tour here. Right when you walk into our house you can see the living-room-now-a-dining-room. Originally when we moved in, this was the formal living room. You know, the place where you put your white sofas, turn on the gas fireplace, sit and have tea (with your pinkie finger ever so slightly elevated off the handle of your dainty tea cup)?… Well, that wasn’t happening. Can we say 2 growing boys, 2 dogs and 1 husband = no white sofas and broken tea cups… hence the space is a dining room. Our dining room (or what was ‘designated’ as a dining room is now the office. And we have 1 living/family room, which is plenty).

Since this was suppose to be a formal living room, there is a fireplace, a gas fireplace. I love it! It’s super fun to decorate the mantle and when we have guests over for dinner and such, I can light up the fireplace while we are sitting at the table…it’s so fancy!

I especially love that this room is rarely used which means IT STAYS CLEAN!  And yes, isn’t that perfect…the first room you lay eyes on when you enter my house is the room that stays clean, and is little effort to keep clean. Pretty smart on my behalf, don’t cha’ think?

Because this room was suppose to be a living room, there are a ton of shelves. No problem except for the corner shelving where a big box TV once resided (circa 1994 when the house was built = no flat screens, just bulky TV’s). So I had to get creative. Trying to keep it cute, not too cluttered and yet fill in the big open space, well it’s a challenge. Magazines work great. Lanterns, globes, bulky items like that have been my go-to decor for those deep shelves in the corner.

And because there are so many shelves I had plenty of space to build a bar! It’s getting a little crowded but it’s fun and feels so sophisticated! Are’t we fancy?! It’s fun to make drinks from our little wanna be bar. I lined all the backs of the shelves with a lime green wrapping paper that I picked up from a local discount store. honest to goodness, all I used was glue sticks and about 5 rolls of wrapping paper… the bookshelves/bar/tons of storage space, looks super cool with the lime green background. And I figured it’d be easy to re-do when I feel the need!

Here’s the corner of the dining room. A playful collage wall with no rhyme or reason to it. I just grabbed canvas prints, framed prints and other hanging goodies and tossed them up onto the wall for texture and to bring the otherwise dull space some lively-ness. And that’s a lego set that my son put together on his 9th birthday. He was so proud and so was I!

Here is one last look into the dining room. This photo was taken near the front door of the house. Looking into the room you can see my lovely generic ghost chairs that I totally adore! The lime green backing of the shelves (thanks to glue sticks and wrapping paper), our old but sweet candle chandelier (no ceiling light in this room), our plank ceiling that we painted grey with black crown molding, the awesome gas fireplace and wood mantle, and our sweat-nequity wood floors that we installed throughout our house (and it took forever!). I am pretty proud of how this room has turned out. I still have a lot of ideas for this space, but not for now. Future projects and back burner stuff. For now, I am smitten with how it has turned out.

Just to give you an idea… here is a photo right after we moved in, and after we’d tore up the old, dingy carpet:

Oh My Gosh!! What a difference, right? New floors, painted the cabinets and shelving, good bye 1970′s blinds (gag), and hello wonderful! Doesn’t it look completely different?!! Oh My Gosh!

Have a great day!

Summer entry

My home is looking summery! Here is my front entry… I’m loving it. And since these pictures were taken, we’ve planted many more flowers!

This is a very small section of our front porch. My favorite part… THE FLAMINGO! I love her and all her pink goodness! My rain boots are a close 2nd!

Here is what we walk into every day. A fresh, yellow bench with a colorful family collage on canvas. It makes me smile every time I look at it. And that’s a sneak peak at our kitchen straight ahead.

And this is another view of the front entry. Those stairs lead up to all the bedrooms. It’s quite a small space but it has multiple functions for sure. Shoes go next to the door. Kids backpacks and jackets hang over on the wall and the yellow bench is always multi-tasking too.

And one last peak of the front entry, from a lower level. Yes, I staged the shoes… those orange shoes are my most favorite shoes EVER! ANd a little teaser of the dining room there in the background.

I LOVE SUMMER! Make it a great day!

Remember how excited I was about the Johnathan Adler collection being released at JC Penny? If not, be sure to read more about it here (soooo exciting).

I had to share this:

And YES, that included the JA collection, HOLLA!!!!

{patting myself on the back}

Don’t you just love a sale? And one that includes the Jonathan Adler collection… could it be any better????

Make it a great day!

I am a color-lovin-junkie. I admit it!

Lately I have been lovin’ on Fiestaware. I currently have a stock pile of white dishes, I love my white and they have stood the test of time (they really are timeless). However, I am just dying (yes, I am dying) to get my hands on some Fiestaware. White is great but truth be told, it gets a bit boring, it’s very ‘safe’.

My “other” mother (she’s been my moms bff for 30+years and always been in my life) has collected Fiestaware for years. She has an amazing collection. Her mother collected Fiestaware too. Sandie (my “other” mother) has a lot of timeless, discontinued pieces that are just amazing.

I too want to be a collector of something, maybe it should be Fiestaware?! And it’s made in the USA, so that’s a perk too!

Here are some great ‘inspiration’ photos of the lovely, eye-catching, drool worthy Fiestaware.

Wouldn’t this dinnerware make a great addition to my kitchen (or any kitchen for that matter? I think it would for sure! it’s lovely and the color options seem plentiful. I am really digging the new flamingo color. I also love the tangerine and turquoise.

Do you have Fiestaware? Do you love it and has it stood the test of time (not only in quality but function and design)?

And here is a great link to some background information on Fiestaware.

hanging beds

Yipee!!!! The boys room is finished almost done… the beds are hanging and the boys are sleeping in them! I am so happy with how they turned out and the boys are over-the-moon excited! The hanging beds make the room feel so much larger and give us a ton of additional space. I will post more detailed photos next week. Here is where we’re at so far:

We still need to do all the “detail” work. Getting a new light fixture and ditching that ceiling fan is our first priority (can you say gag?). We’d also like to hang up a few pictures and we need to seal the pine ladder and the beds (to give them a finished look.

The baseboards are painted and caulked (whoo-hoo), beds are fastened down and hanging and the room is clean, we are making LOTS of progress!

On last photo until next week:

Have a great weekend!

adding baseboard

The new boy bedroom is starting to take shape. The boys will actually be sleeping in their new beds tonight! So exciting. Everyone has been working away and giving their all to make this room a reality.

Late last night we added the baseboards and base shoe (a.k.a. quarter round). It’s all installed but the real work begins after installation (IMO) when it comes to baseboards. They will still need to be painted, the nail holes have to be filled filled then lightly sanded, caulked and repainted… soooooo much work. So much detailed work. But enough complaining, here is where we last night right around bed time.

These pictures are super yellowish, the room looks like it has a bad case of jaundice! Like I said, it was late so there was no natural light. Here is the handy hubby installing the new baseboards and quarter round (try not to sneak a peak at that plumber crack!! lol).

Just looking at these photos makes me cringe, I really dislike caulking and painting baseboards and quarter round… boo-hoo… I’m just being a lazy butt!  Once it’s all done it will be well worth it. Finished baseboards really add that professional touch to a finished room. I love the way baseboards complete a room/house. Yes, I am a baseboard snob. I would notice your baseboards if you had me over!!

And… {drum roll please} here is

sneak peak

of whats to come!!!!!

look ya’ll!! a hanging bed!!!!! Holla!!

More to come soon… I promise!!

Make it a great day!

New Boys Room

This week we are working away on a NEW room for our 2 boys. I had a great idea on this post here, however we have decided to go another route all together. The reason for our change of heart (as far as the design in this room)… we couldn’t fit two bunk beds/loft beds in one room. And, we weren’t all together happy with the old loft bed that we built a few years ago, it was not entirely sturdy (made a lot of noise). Two loft beds would also mean less space, and this room is already small. So we came up with something new, with more room and very hip!

Here is our current mood board.  We started putting life to this mood board yesterday, so this one is the real deal!

The plan; keep the room simple, modern and also fun for the boys.

1. The boys want an outer space theme, this mobile (or something similar) will be a perfect touch, including dark touches of color throughout the room.

2. Bookshelves are always a must. Both of our boys love to read and we always want to encourage it. These cute, simple little bookshelves would be a great addition, next to each one of the new, hanging beds. These shelves are narrow and won’t stick out too far, therefore we should have less injuries!

3.  LED, battery operated lights that we can stick above their bed for reading light. These look pretty good, something that is small yet efficient and “space” like for our outer space room. I think these are pretty neat. No wiring or cords necessary.

4. We have decided that we are going to build two hanging beds. The photo above was a great starting point for us. Ultimately we are thinking along the lines of a hanging, platform style, bed using link chain (#5)

5. Chain link for hanging the new, platform beds. This is sort of “space” like… metal, and floating, very ‘out-of-this-world’ if you ask me!

6. A gray room, preferably dark gray. I am thinking darker than this swatch. The boy room has not been painted (and it is in desperate need) so anything will look better than it’s current “sponge” painting by the previous home owners.

7. Simple bed linens. A thin, gray wool blanket to wrap around the end of a white sheeted bed would be dreamy (IMO) but the boys may not be entirely keen on that idea. Might be a little too boring for them.

So far that is our decor plan for this room and like I mentioned earlier… we’ve already started!!! Yeah!

Stay tuned, this project WILL be done by the end of the week.

dreamy office

I entered another addicting Oliobard contest (see my other Olioboards here and here). This time the contest is for creating a mood board of “your dream office space”.  Here is what I made:

Go on over and vote for me if you dare (here)!!

My dream office is less of the traditional office space and more of the creative, play space. I would love to have an office like this one… a place where I can paint, draw, work creatively on my computer, drink coffee, lounge around and even take a bike ride to clear my mind.

I would especially love to have these large windows to view the beautiful outside world. I am always more inspired when nature is by my side.

Best things about this space (in my opinion) & in no particular order:

* The Nespresso machine – must have my coffee/espresso, yum!! (see my post on the Nespresso here)

* The art work. I would love to incorporate more colorful/fun art into my current work space. I feel like it gives the space some spice and it keeps the mood happy… just what I need to stay motivate.

* Love the sleek, orange desk and the yellow side table. Again, colorful and happy accents in an office would be my dream space.

* Of course the bike! How great would it be to jump on this ultra hip bike and go for a spin in the middle of the day? I say that would be just fantastic! Heck yeah! A bike in the office, so cool!

I love this entire space. To see the specifics and find out more about the contest and the items pictured in the mood board, just go here. While you’re there, vote for me!!

Have fun, try not to get addicted!!

* PS… I am not affiliated with Olioboard and they are not paying me for this post (darn it).

Kilim Rug Update

My Turkish Kilim rug arrived a few days ago. It is SOOOO beautiful and even more perfect than I had hoped for. I really want to put it in the living room, where I can admire it on a daily basis. As of right now it is resting in our master bedroom until we decide on the new living room arrangement (specifically a new sofa and coffee table/ottoman). Until we have that figured out, I am secretly enjoying her in my bedroom every night. It’s true love for sure. See my original posts on Kilim rug love here and here.

This is her (I am referring to the rug as though it is a person) temporary resting place:

It looks a bit more red in this photo than it actually is in real life. There is also some orange in there (which is hard to see in this picture). The rug was shipped from Turkey, I bought it on line from here and I am more than pleased with everything. It shipped quick, it looks exactly as it was pictured on ebay and the price was more than fair, I actually feel like I got a great deal.

The best part, for me, was the certificate of authenticity that came with the rug. There was a little background information on my sweet, vintage, Turkish rug. This rug is just over 60 years old (isn’t that neat, there’s history laying right there on my bedroom floor, Turkish history), and all the colors are natural dye. The rug is hand woven wool with tied knot ends giving it an even more vintage look. The rug lays fairly flat with an uneven/crooked look to the sides, which I absolutely LOVE! I hope I can afford a runner for our hallway downstairs too. I am so pleased with this purchase!

Do you love Kilim rugs too? I would love to see pictures of how you’ve used them in your own homes.

Make it a great week!

Jonathan Adler Love

OH MY GOSH!!! I am smitten! Jonathan Adler has a BRAND NEW collection at JC Penny! Holla! {me: jumping up and down like a 5 year old on their birthday}.

I saw most of the items in the photo above on line at the JC Penny web site: loving EVERYTHING they have!!! Honestly, Jonathan Adler is my style icon, I admire him SO, SO much. And now he has this affordable, quality line at of all places JC Penny! Awesome! The two sofa’s (one is pictured below) are freaking beautiful and so stylish and classy. I didn’t find the plates (shown in the photo above) but keeping my fingers crossed that more kitchen items will come available.

Loving the living room set up in the photo above. Especially those retro styled nesting tables with that sleek, modern sofa. I want to jump right into that photo and live in the room! Sweet and sexy… it’s soooo me!!

Here are a few things I window shopped for on the web site:

I am in LOVE (as if you didn’t notice). JC Penny is quickly becoming one of my favorite on-line shopping stops (see my JCP sofa deals here). And now that they have my man Jonathan, I am sure to be buying something VERY soon. EEK!! SO excited!!

Visit/see more here.

* PS… I wish I was paid for this, but I wasn’t and I am in no way, shape or form soliciting for JCP. These are solely my opinions… and they are pretty awesome (IMO)!!
